AMD'S
director Zak Waddell was responsible for the preliminary design of a production
run of three (3) 170 foot bulk carriers. The vessel is to carry bulk sugar
from upstream of a South American river to a trans-shipment point along
the Atlantic Coast of South America.
Some of the key aspects of the vessel's design are as follows:
Structure
design using Bureau Veritas rules for Steel Ships. |
Initial
stability calculations to IMO regulations. |
Bow
redesign to meet SOLAS minimum bow height criteria. |
Engine
room & crew accommodation redesign. |
Load
Line calculation (preliminary) SOLAS. |
Tonnage
calculation (preliminary) SOLAS. |
Powering
/ resistance calculation (preliminary). |
Estimated
constructed mass |
Estimated
manufacturing cost. |
Anchor
sizing. |
Maximum
payload & draft creating shallow water restrictions. |
Design
to SOLAS requirements.
| The
greatest challenge to the designer is the manufacturing process. The vessel
is to be constructed by modular extrusion, as the yard is not large enough
to accommodate the length of the vessel. It was calculated that the stern
of the vessel would be floating when the bow section is being joined. |
